As a homeowner, you know there’s always something that needs to be done. Some tasks are monumental, the sort of things that require budget and perhaps a bit of time off work, like renovating attic space or installing a new HVAC system.
And then there are tasks that are just so small that they sometimes fall off your list. But, they shouldn’t. These three chores are so important – and it will take less than an hour to complete all of them. So why not get them done now?
Replace the HVAC Filters – Typically, air filters require replacements about every other month. You’ll also need to vacuum the filter covers at least once a year. If you can’t remember the last time you did either, why not do it now? Dirty HAVAC filters make the system work harder thereby shortening its life.
Test Your Smoke Alarms – It probably takes longer to find the step ladder than it does to climb it and push the button. (Of course, a broom handle works well too!) And, if you have other alert systems, such as gas or water, now’s the time to test those too. If you have a Smartphone app connecting all these systems, take a minute to make sure the software is up to date, and you’re connected to the platform.
Inspect for Mold – You know mold when you see it, but you can’t always see it. Walk through your home to inspect all the rooms with plumbing – even if you don’t use them. Check all around each visible pipe and faucet and inspect all the walls of your basement, especially behind the water heater. And don’t forget to check around the washing machine too.
While you’re at it, consider making a few notes on your calendar, so you don’t have to keep everything in your head. It’s always much easier than trying to remember the last time you changed your air filter or tested the batteries in your alert systems.
